The archer was greatly surprised and asked, "What do you mean by 'not sincere'?"

The old man smiled without answering and pointed to a tree in the courtyard, ordering the archer to shoot its leaves. The archer shot three arrows in succession, all hitting the center of the leaves. The old man then ordered him to shoot another tree's leaves, and the archer did so again.

Finally, the old man said, "You can hit the target, but it is not out of genuine intention. If you truly intended to shoot, it would move heaven and earth, and even birds and beasts would be startled."

The archer understood and since then diligently cultivated virtue, eventually becoming a great general.
